AUTO ITALIA SIGNS DEAL WITH AAM TO PROVIDE 24-HOUR ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE TO NEW ALFA ROMEOS

Sime Darby Auto Italia Sdn Bhd (Auto Italia), the main distributor for Alfa Romeo in Malaysia, has signed an agreement with the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) to provide 24-hour roadside assistance to its customers.

The two-year free support will cover critical services such as towing and minor on-site repairs for every Alfa Romeo sold by Auto Italia. This latest customer-focused initiative by the company, a subsidiary of the Sime Darby Group, is aimed at making Alfa ownership in Malaysia a worry-free experience.

The agreement was signed by Sime Darby Motor Group (Malaysia/Thailand) Managing Director Mr Rajan Thurairatnam and AAM Chairman YM Tunku Datuk Mudzaffar bin Tunku Mustapha at Auto Italia’s head office and main 3S centre at Glenmarie recently.

Since assuming the role of main distributor in August last year, Auto Italia has been focusing on delivering real value to Alfa owners in the country as part of its strategy to grow Alfa Romeo into a desirable luxury brand.

“Today, Alfa owners enjoy professional and reasonably priced aftersales support and readily available parts. We have also taken the bold step of offering a 2-year warranty and an unprecedented 3-year free maintenance package for all new cars purchased from us. We have now made Alfa ownership an even more attractive proposition with free 24-hour roadside assistance,” said Mr Rajan.

YM Tunku Datuk Mudzaffar said that the association is proud to work with Auto Italia to support a renowned marque like Alfa Romeo.

“The brand continues to evoke strong passion and emotion among discerning motoring enthusiasts. We will work closely with Auto Italia to ensure that our staff are well trained to handle this new generation of Alfa Romeos with cutting-edge technology,” he said.

The latest benefit for Alfa lovers came on the heels of an announcement by Auto Italia of a unique service campaign exclusive for 2006 covering a comprehensive list of commonly requested services for all models of the Italian marque.

The campaign will enable Alfa owners to plan in advance so that they can take advantage of reasonably priced packages throughout the year and not just for a limited period as is the case with many promotions.

Most of the oil change packages offered by Auto Italia also come with three price options depending on the type of engine oil used. This allows the customer the flexibility to choose based on his budget and preference instead of being forced to use a premium-priced oil that might not be necessary for his car.

Alfa Romeo History

Alfa Romeo’s place in motoring history began in 1906 under the name of Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) founded by French entrepreneur Alexandre Darracq. The cars produced were unsuited for local conditions, unreliable and underpowered. Within three years, the company was on the brink of bankruptcy and changed its name to Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili or A.L.F.A.

After the 1st world war, the future of the company seemed bleak. An industrialist and mining engineer named Nicola Romeo stepped in, bought into A.L.F.A. and took over as managing director. A.L.F.A. was then making tractors, aero-engines, railway equipment and compressors and car-making then was a distant reminder of the pre-war days.

In 1918, there was no demand for Romeo’s products as the war had ended. Cars were in short supply and the car market was booming. Romeo turned to car production and managed to produce cars from 1914 parts stored during the outbreak of war. However, new designs and marketing strategies were badly needed. A new name was also needed as A.L.F.A was outdated. Romeo was linked with heavy industrial engineering with no significance to car buyers. Nicola Romeo found the perfect solution by combining the links of the past with the future as part of an engineering group well respected for its high quality and efficiency.

Thus, Alfa Romeo of Milan was born.

“ALFA: the word itself is an entire program, or rather, the clear explanation of a program. It designates the first letter of the alphabet, the symbol of a starting point, the beginning of something, a new life taking shape…” — magazine in 1910

From 1929 to 1931, the Alfa 6C 1750 remains unchallenged in all the races in the Mille Miglia Sports category. Peter Hull, in his History of Alfa Romeo (1970) wrote of the 1750: “Cars as beautiful and exiting as beautiful women do not generally come without their faults. But in this respect the Alfa 1750 is an exception”.

Sporting activity is affected by the political climate and sanctions – Mussolini bans Italian drivers from racing in France

In 1978: The Giulietta is featured in “Vaggio con Anita” (1978), which stars Goldie Hawn. “Giulia” police cars are used in other films during car chases and getaways, one cinema classic being the original Italian Job.

Giorgio Bocca calls Alfa cars “exciting”, and adds that the Alfetta “had a perfect system for wheel balance on bends.”

1980-1990

The eighties began with a revolution in turbo engines, and witnesses the advent of aeronautic or aeronautical technology used in car design and technology.

The Alfa 33 replaces the Alfasud in the Alfa range and on the Pomigliano production line, but retains the Alfasud’s general mechanical framework. The car’s style, however, is completely renewed and modern. A new expression is coined to describe it – a “split two-box” – and it takes the wedge shape already used on the Giulietta.
